Fungal infections and subsequent symptoms can occur at any part of your nail. It could happen throughout one nail or at several nails at once. There are some visible signs, such as scaling below the nail, which is also referred to as subungual hyperkeratosis. At times, you have yellow or white streaks on your nails – these are also referred to as lateral onychomycosis. A tip or corner of your nail may also appear to be crumbling, which is referred to as distal onychomycosis.

There are other visible signs of toenail infection, such as

  • Flaking white areas that appear on the surface of your nail
  • Pits in your nails
  • Yellow spots that appear at the bottom areas of your nail, which is also referred to as proximal onychomycosis
  • Complete loss of your nail

If a nail has become distorted and has lifted off from the nail bed it is a sign of fungal infection in that part of your body.

If an infected nail is starting to smell bad then it has likely been infected by fungi. Similarly if a nail has become too thick or brittle it is a sign of fungal infection as well.

Fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails are known as onychomycosis or tinea unguium. Fungal infections normally take some time in order to develop. This also implies that the initial signs of fungal infection are subtle and this is why they are so hard to notice at an early stage.
