Tips on Wearing High Heels

Many women feel that they can’t live without them – but long-suffering feet often start to rebel after a long period in high heels! So if you can’t avoid the call of fashion, how can you wear your favourite skyscrapers without damaging your feet?

The key lies in good preparation and sensible measures to minimise foot problems. And it’s vital to recognise that high heels can, and do, cause foot problems if worn to excess, not to mention ankle sprains if a fall occurs! So without further ado, here are some of our top tips from the experts.

Don’t wear high heels all the time

High heels force your feet, ankles, calves and knees to adopt an unnatural posture and gait. Minimise the ill-effects by limiting your heel time and mixing up your wardrobe with flatter shoes, ideally with a very small heel and a comfortable fit. Invest in some proper orthopaedic shoes for maximum comfort points and remember to go barefoot when you can to allow your feet to flex and move in the way that they are meant to.

Check your sizing

Many women wear the wrong size shoe and don’t realise it. Your foot size can increase by up to one entire size, especially after having children. Have your feet professionally measured for length and width before you buy new shoes. This will rapidly improve your comfort levels.

Know your foot type

A podiatrist can assess your foot type and see whether you have high arched feet or flat feet for example. He or she can also check for bunions and any other problems that are likely to give you pain or to become exacerbated if you wear high heels.
